Moonsail Newfoundlands is a small kennel located in Northeast WI. At Moonsail, we strive to breed Newfoundlands that are sound in mind and body and conform to the breed standard. We feel strongly that the breed should remain true to it's working heritage, so in our breeding program we also select for intelligence, instinct and desire to please.

To make sure we are achieving our health goals, our Newfs are screened for hip/elbow dysplasia. X-rays are submitted to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals for evaluation. Hearts are evaluated by a board certified cardiologist at 10 weeks of age and after 1 year of age for final adult certification and submission to OFA. We also DNA test for Cystinuria. Additional tests are performed as necessary.
A link to each or our dogs' OFA results database page is provided on their respective website pages. We encourage you to visit their page and welcome any questions you may have.
To ensure we are achieving our conformation and working goals, we actively exhibit in conformation, obedience, draft and water work. We've titled our Newfs in all these venues. Several Moonsail Newfs are also therapy dogs.
Before any of our pups go to their new homes, they will have received a well puppy exam, first vaccination and a cardiology check up at 10 weeks by a board certified cardiologist. Additionally, we temperament test using the Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test. We use the results along with our written observations to match the right puppy with the right home and to attempt to identify future working ability.
All our puppies are whelped/raised inside our home until they leave for their new homes. They are exposed to all the sights/sounds of every day life and receive daily interactions with humans. We also use the "Rule of 7's".
Please note that Moonsail Newfoundlands does not sell puppies sight unseen or ship. We prefer to place puppies fairly locally which enables us to be physically available to help our new owners.
We are very selective about our prospective puppy buyers. Before we agree to place a puppy, we require several "getting to know you" phone calls followed by home visits. This is important to make sure that the home is a good "fit" for the puppy. It also reassures the prospective buyer that their new family member is coming from a responsible breeder when the buyer has the opportunity to meet our dogs and see where/how our puppies are raised.
We are proud that Moonsail Newfoundlands has met the requirements to be recognized as a "Breeder of Merit" by the American Kennel Club.

A little about Kathy & Steve

Shelby & Kathy
Kathy obtained her first Newf Jack in early 1989. Jack came to live with Kathy when his previous family could no longer keep him. He was a wonderful boy and a great introduction to the breed.
Kathy's second Newf Maggie came along in 1990. Maggie was Kathy's first show dog and upon whelping her first litter in 1995, became the foundation for Moonsail.
Kathy is a long time member (1989) of the North Central Newfoundland Club, a member of the Newfoundland Club of America since 1995 and also belongs to Winnegamie Dog Club serving as a volunteer obedience and conformation instructor. Kathy served multiple terms on the NCNC Board of Directors and is a past member of the Northern Illinois Dog Club having served multiple terms as director and recording secretary.

Shelby (L), Brenna & Steve
Steve's love affair with Newfs started in the 1980's after a chance meeting with one in New York. Little did he know then that "Masada" would soon come to live with him and become the first of many Newfs to enrich his life.
While living in Vermont, Steve was a member of the Newfoundland Club of New England and active in Newfoundland rescue. He is a long time member of the NCA and a member of the North Central Newfoundland Club.
A graduate of Cornell University School of Veterinary Medicine, he is now retired from private practice and teaching foreign animal disease response for the Department of Homeland Security.
